In Defence of Meghan Markle

Lest we forget, racism has blighted our children and young people’s lives in the UK. British TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson’s fantasy about the demonised Meghan Markle should scare every Black woman, especially professional women who travel across the country alone. It is time for more Black women to speak out, write letters to their MPs and local councillors. We (mothers) owe it to our daughters (think of the strip and search case of ‘Child Q’), granddaughters and future generations to challenge systemic racism. Like her or loathe her, Meghan Markle (Duchess of Sussex) has highlighted racism within the royal family, in the media and also the British public.

In regards to the so-called “senior working royals” (what work: cutting ribbons, planting trees and shaking hands with strangers?), such as the new Queen Consort (who is a domestic violence patron), the newly-minted Princess of Wales (who has been elevated to sainthood) and Countess Sophie of Wessex (who lives a mansion consisting of 120 rooms), they are running around taking photos with Black children in schools, libraries and on walkabouts as if they’ve just discovered that Black people (‘untouchables’ before Meghan married Harry) live in England. This flurry of activity is designed to distract, deny (racism within the royal family) detract and deceive gullible Black people, including misinformed pastors/faith leaders who have failed in their duty of care: remember the Good Samaritan?

Recently, upon meeting King Charles, a misguided young African woman crawled on her knees like an enslaved person, as a cultural sign of respect, to honour a man who once yearned to be his then mistress’s Tampax. Lest we forget: “Tampaxgate!”

I would further posit that Black children should not be allowed anywhere near a king whose two mixed race grandchildren have not yet been given titles; a man whose son’s mixed race wife is being racially harassed by a bunch of powerful middle-aged white media men! These rogues seem to fantasise about “sexing” Markle to the point where she now lives in their heads rent-free; hence they lie awake in bed at night dreaming of “grinding” (teeth) her and wake up in frustration only to write column inches of defamatory articles based on “unrequited love” (Piers Morgan?) and fantasise about a nude Markle being splattered with ‘shit’. Oh, those delicate ankles doing ‘the walk of shame’ in Game of Thrones, eh, Clarkson!

Given the royal family’s insistence that “We are very much not a racist family” (Prince William speaking on their behalf), where is the official statement from Kensington Palace (William?) and Buckingham Palace (Prince Charles) condemning the racism and bullying that Markle is hourly subjected to by the media, including royal correspondents? I seem to recall Prince William issuing a statement when the Black footballers were racially abused for missing penalty goals (I’m not a football fan). Talk about working royals and “performative allyship”. Shame! ‘Masking’ masquerading as service to the black community and to the Commonwealth.

Ironically, while the media men continue to swoop on Markle like vultures, it seems that they have forgotten Prince Andrew. If anyone has brought shame on the royal family, it is the late monarch’s favourite son, who enjoys royal security while Prince Harry is fighting in court to pay for his own private security when he and his family visit the UK. So much for Queen Elizabeth the Great, stating, “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of the family.” Show your son, his wife and your grandchildren (Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet) some public support, King Charles - defender of the faith!
